LIQUIDS FILTRATION
Filter your dense liquids
from solid particles!
Dense-liquid filtration is needed to improve the
texture of your pastes and creams
Dense and viscous liquids filtration is the sieving process used to remove solid residues and unwanted particles from pastes, creams and other high‑viscosity liquids. Its main objective is to improve texture and consistency while protecting downstream equipment and final product quality.
During production, dense liquids such as coatings, sauces, creams and pastes often contain residual solid particles originating from previous steps, for example from grinding, mixing or dissolving operations. If not removed, these particles can affect surface finish, create defects in coatings, disturb mouthfeel in food products or block dosing and filling equipment. Filtering these liquids with vibrating sieves is therefore a good quality practice to obtain a cleaner, more homogeneous product before it moves to the next process step or packaging.
Because of their rheology, dense liquids require a specific sieving treatment. The filtration process must minimise the inclusion of air bubbles and ensure that the liquid flows smoothly across the mesh without creating stagnant areas where unfiltered product can accumulate. At the same time, the solid fraction is often sticky and needs more time than in other contexts to travel towards the oversize outlet, which means vibration and residence time must be carefully controlled.

Typical installation contexts
Filtration of dense and viscous liquids is usually installed downstream of mixing, dispersing or homogenisation steps, where undissolved particles or agglomerates may still be present. It can also be placed before storage tanks, feed tanks for filling lines or coating equipment, ensuring that only properly filtered product enters these critical process stages. In food applications, filtration is often integrated between cooking or melting steps and final dosing or packaging.
Depending on the process layout, dense liquids can be fed to the sieve from pressurised lines, transfer pumps or gravity‑fed vessels. The installation point is chosen to provide a stable flow and sufficient head or pump capacity to push the viscous product across the screening surface, while allowing operators easy access for inspection and cleaning.

VSB
To make filtration of dense liquids easier, MLT Cuccolini offers a dedicated solution: the VSB vibrating sieve range.
VSB units can be configured with up to two decks and are capable of handling flowrates up to around 2 m³/h, depending on product viscosity, solid content and mesh size. The vibration pattern is specifically tuned for dense liquids, promoting a controlled flow over the mesh and helping sticky solids move towards the oversize outlet without blocking the screen.
The design of VSB machines takes into account the need to minimise air entrainment and avoid zones where product could remain unfiltered on the mesh surface.
Careful selection of vibration parameters, internal geometry and outlet configuration ensures that the liquid passes through the screen efficiently, while the retained solid fraction is discharged in a controlled way.
This supports both product quality and cleaning procedures, as less residue remains in the machine at the end of each batch.
Over the years, MLT Cuccolini has developed specific adjustments and configurations to match
different dense liquid behaviours in reaction to vibration.
This application know‑how helps define the right combination of mesh size, deck configuration
and operating parameters for each customer, whether the product is a chemical coating, a food
paste, a cream or another type of viscous liquid.

applications across different production needs.
KEY BENEFITS
OF dense luiqids filtration
WITH MLT CUCCOLINI SIEVES
Using MLT Cuccolini equipment for fluid liquids filtration delivers cleaner liquids and controlled solids discharge without manual intervention, improving process reliability and reducing operator workload. The ability to reduce water content in the solid fraction, even if not to full dewatering levels, can also lower energy consumption when drying is the subsequent step.
With dedicated solutions for both high‑flow and fine‑filtration duties, filtration systems can be tailored to different industries, capacities and plant layouts, supporting better protection of downstream equipment, easier cleaning and stable, repeatable performance.
