Safety sieving is the sieving step used to clean granular or powder products from foreign bodies and unwanted lumps before they move to the next process stage or reach the final user. It is typically carried out with one mesh size selected according to the minimum dimensions of the possible contaminants to be removed.
During production, transfer and storage, bulk solids can be contaminated by foreign particles such as metal, plastic, wooden parts, insects and other debris, or can develop a limited percentage of lumps and agglomerates.
If these are not removed, they can compromise product quality, block equipment and create non-conformities at packaging or in the final application, and even sanitary casualties.
Safety sieving addresses this by passing the product over a single sieving surface, where oversize contaminants and lumps are retained while on-size material continues to downstream operations.
The mesh aperture is chosen based on the smallest dimension of the foreign bodies and lumps that must be captured, as well as on the acceptable maximum particle size for the product. This makes safety sieving a critical quality gate that can be integrated at different stages of the process flow, depending on where contamination is most likely to occur and where removal is most effective.

Typical installation contexts
Safety sieving is often installed directly under silos or storage hoppers, where it protects the rest of the line from contaminants originating during storage or filling. It can also be located under big bag emptying stations and bag emptying stations or sack tips, where foreign bodies from packaging or manual handling are more common.
Further typical positions include installation after mills, mixers, blenders and other processing equipment, where lumps and oversize particles are generated, and immediately before packaging machines or filling systems, where a final quality check is required. Depending on the process, safety sieves can be integrated in gravity‑fed sections or placed inline with pneumatic or vacuum conveying systems, ensuring that only properly screened product reaches dosing, packing or further processing.

VPB/M
When safety sieving requires fine and superfine mesh sizes below 0.8 mm, the recommended solution is the VPB/M vertical‑motor sieve range. The vertical drive generates a three‑dimensional vibration that enhances control of residence time on the mesh and maintains efficient separation even with finer apertures.
VPB/M machines are typically installed after milling, mixing or feeding steps where a finer cut point is needed to guarantee product quality.
CS/CD multifrequency sieves
For critical dry products that are fatty, cohesive or otherwise difficult to sieve, and where mesh sizes are below 3 mm, MLT Cuccolini applies CS/CD multifrequency sieves .
The multifrequency technology helps keep the mesh surface active, prevents blinding and supports stable throughput on powders that would quickly block a conventional screen. These units are especially valuable where process reliability and reduction of manual cleaning are key requirements.
Single‑deck VTU units
In applications requiring very high flowrates, single‑deck VTU units can also be used for safety sieving. Their operating principle and large screening surface enable high throughput while maintaining the necessary cut point, making them suitable for bulk handling and centralised safety sieving stations.
