SUGAR SAFETY SIEVING AND CLASSIFICATION

Reliable sugar safety sieving and classification are essential to protect product quality, hygiene and process efficiency in sugar production and downstream food applications. By selecting the appropriate vibrating sieve for each installation point, refined and cane sugar can be screened to remove contaminants, separate intermediate fractions and generate fine grades such as powdered sugar, ensuring consistent performance in confectionery, bakery and pharmaceutical processes.

SUGAR SAFETY SIEVING AND CLASSIFICATION

Sugar handling processes involve both safety sieving and particle size classification, each with specific objectives. Safety sieving focuses on removing foreign bodies, lumps and coarse agglomerates that may originate from storage, conveying or packaging, while classification creates defined fractions, from coarse crystals to very fine powders, tailored to the requirements of different end products. In both cases, controlled vibration, suitable mesh ranges and hygienic design are key to achieving stable throughput and repeatable quality.

For sugar safety sieving duties, MLT Cuccolini applies its range of vibrating sieves successfully configured for crystalline sugar behaviour. VP2 units installed beneath silos, hoppers, big bag discharge points or sack tip stations remove oversize crystals, lumps and foreign bodies before the sugar is sent to further processing or packaging, while VP2_ST versions are available where integration into bag opening stations is required. When sugar is conveyed under vacuum, the VTP inline sieve provides continuous safety sieving in the 10 to 0.8 mm mesh size range without significantly slowing down the conveying line, and VPB/M vertical‑motor models can be selected when finer meshes are needed.

Granulated sugar crystals

In sugar production plants, a typical classification range covers mesh sizes from approximately 5–6 mm down to around 0.3 mm. In this field and in a single step, MLT Cuccolini vibrating sieves like VPB/M or T-Line VTU tumblers can be used to perform safety sieving, create intermediate fractions suitable for different uses and remove unwanted dust or very fine material generated during handling. The correct selection of mesh and installation point allows producers to manage multiple grades using compact equipment with straightforward maintenance and cleaning.

For the first macro‑classification stage immediately after sugar production, MLT Cuccolini offers the T‑Line tumbler screening machines. The gentle, multi‑deck tumbling motion of T‑Line units is particularly suited to refined crystal and cane sugar, allowing precise separation of several fractions with minimal particle degradation and controlled dust generation. This technology is ideal for defining coarse and medium sugar grades before the product is directed to further finishing or conditioning steps.

In more advanced product stages, additional classification steps can generate very fine fractions such as powdered sugar or similar products for industrial use, including certain pharmaceutical product grades. Here, appropriate combinations of fine meshes and carefully controlled sieving parameters are required to maintain flowability and avoid excessive agglomeration, especially when handling more hygroscopic or pasty sugar types, where feasibility must be assessed case by case.

Independently of the MLT Cuccolini sieving solution applied for safety sieving and classification of sugar in its different grades, it is important to remind the users that the units internal walls, despite the application of specific metal finishings to minimise product's cohesion, require internal cleaning procedures to be included in the day-to-day operation of sieving equipment. Excessive layers of product remaining attached to the internal walls due to caramelising of product based on environmental temperatures may interfere with vibrating sieving equipment operation due to additional weight placed on structural parts.

Choosing MLT Cuccolini for sugar safety sieving and classification means working with solutions that combine proven food‑industry experience with flexible equipment configurations. From coarse safety sieving to intermediate grading and fine fraction production, these systems help improve product consistency, protect downstream processes, reduce waste and support hygienic operation and easy cleaning.

Whether the requirement is to secure bulk sugar before storage and packaging or to classify it into precisely defined product grades, MLT Cuccolini supports both sugar producers and downstream users in selecting the most suitable vibrating or tumbler sieve configuration for their specific plant layout and capacity targets.
