Today, a customer asked us if we can supply steel balls for mesh cleaning.
A curious request – almost comic, from an industry insider’s point of view – that seemed born more from a moment of exasperation (and perhaps from an unchecked AI consultation?…) than from a real technical need.
In fact, digging a little deeper, the typical situation of many companies emerged: production staff do not strictly follow the established mesh inspection procedures, the cleaning balls (made of a soft material necessary to bounce under the mesh) gradually reduce in diameter over time until they pass through their perforated support, and the quality departments – in order to try to contain the problem and avoid trouble due to product contamination – look for creative, sometimes fanciful solutions to intercept foreign materials.
And this is where today’s topic is born: quality and unicorns.
We all dream of stable, predictable, documented, and possibly automatic quality control – almost “magical.” But quality does not come from the best materials, nor from a technical detail added after the fact. Quality is a human process before it is a technical one.
When we try to compensate for a lack of operational discipline with quick fixes – such as changing materials, adding sensors or, indeed, introducing improbable cleaning balls – we often end up merely shifting the problem from one point in the system to another.
The truth is that there are no quality unicorns. There are people, procedures, and a subtle balance between technology and human behaviour. A machine can help, an accessory can improve efficiency, but without awareness and training, the effect is temporary.
Real quality is earned day after day, doing the same things well, with method. And this, for those of us who work “behind the screens,” is exactly what makes our job as concrete as it is fascinating.
Our Approach: Real Insights for Real Quality
At MLT Cuccolini we do not sell unicorns. We sell experience, technical expertise and – above all – concrete insights that help our customers make sensible decisions to keep quality under control.
We know that every plant is different, every material behaves in its own way, and every production line has its own critical points. This is why, when a customer asks us a question – even an apparently unusual one – our answer always starts from a deep understanding of the context.

Our goal is not to sell the most sophisticated solution, but the most effective one. Because quality is not measured in control accessories, but in repeatable results, controlled costs, and operators who can work with peace of mind.
So, next time you find yourself discussing balls, magic sensors or other “unicorn” solutions, call us. We will tell you whether it really works – or whether there is a simpler, more robust, more genuine way to achieve what you are looking for.
Because behind our MLT Cuccolini vibrating screens, there is always someone who really knows how things work.
